Comiket at the British Library August 2014

Yesterday I had a great day at this year’s Comiket.  It’s always a nice event and a chance to sell my wares and catch up with creator friends.  This time round the event took place in the amazing building of the British Library.

My table neighbours were fabulous artists and buds Anna Dowsland (middle) and Francesca Dare (right).  Francesca was rightly proud of her new Penny Blackfeather banner and her new collected edition of Penny Blackfeather available through Sloth Comics.Comiket-2014-1Across a small divide were two collaborators for Tempo Lush Tales, Spandex creator Martin Eden (middle) and a very tired but still awesome Van Nim (right)!Comiket-2014-2 Next up you can see how another Tempo Lush Tales contributor, Keara Stewart made her way into many of my photos…Comiket-2014-3Clearly Keara and Karen Rubins were having an amazing time.
Keara is sporting a Lucy the Octopus badge.
Karen, talented comic creator (another Tempo Lush Tales artist) and Phoenix contributor is sporting a weird frown.Comiket-2014-4Finally, Keara’s weird face pulling is joined by Broken Frontier writer Andy Oliver and Myriad Editions editor Corinne PearlmanComiket-2014-5I was determined not to buy anything myself, but couldn’t resist the new children’s book Jampires.  It’s a collaboration between Sarah McIntyre and David O’Connell. Both extremely talented writer artists by themselves, their combined creative power has produced something very special or silly or both!Comiket-2014-6One of the unique features of Comiket is the drawing parade.  Here different artists draw live to a soundtrack of music chosen by themselves.
Here, the wonderful Jade Sarson doodles away.  Watch out for Jade’s art contributions to the upcoming Rosie and Jacinda comic!Comiket-2014-7One last look at my Comiket table before I focus on getting four new Tempo Lush comics ready for release in October!Comiket-2014-8

Hanging at my table at May MCM London 2014

I’ve done a half dozen or so MCM Comic Cons now and still enjoy them.

Always nice to see old friends, meet new folk and draw portraits, plus I’m still touched that anyone wants to buy my comics and prints!  The most gratifying thing is when people have already bought something at a previous show and liked it enough to come back and buy something else!

Here’s some pics, starting with with my table spread…

Process at Gosh / Watercolour Presentation Pictures

I had a great time giving a watercolour presentation at Process at Gosh Comics last night.

Before it kicked off I prepared an ink drawing to add colour to later…

WatercolourProcess-01 WatercolourProcess-02 WatercolourProcess-03 WatercolourProcess-04Process is organised by the fantastic Steve Walsh (below, far right).  There was a great turn out yesterday.
WatercolourProcess-04.5 WatercolourProcess-05Andy Poyiadgi talked brilliantly about putting together his exhibition for The Lakes comics festival and how the festival involved the local community, similar to the French Angouleme Festival.
WatercolourProcess-06Next up the brilliant Lorenzo Fiorini talked through the process of laying out panels and story telling as told to him by artist Eduardo Risso (100 Bullets, Batman: Noir). WatercolourProcess-07 WatercolourProcess-08Then it was over to me to babble away while painting.  Two pics below by Lily Withycombe.WatercolourProcess-09 WatercolourProcess-10It was good to hear further watercolour suggestions and ideas from many of the experienced creators gathered around, including Rosie Polet, Francesca Dare and Maartje Schalkx.
Two pics below by Francesca.WatercolourProcess-11 WatercolourProcess-12So here was the piece by the end of the presentation…WatercolourProcess-13And here it is after I added some more layers of watercolour.
I added some additional texture on the wood, ground and bushes. I also gave some of the other areas richer and more defined tones.
After scanning it, I cleaned up the speech bubble a bit on Photoshop.WatercolourProcess-14There you go.  Thanks very much to Steve for asking me to come along!

WASP (Webcomic Artist Swap Project) coming your way February 2013

In the week beginning February 25th 2013 something special is happening to a select group of UK webcomics…

Twelve artists have taken up the challenge of swapping art duties amongst their respective webcomics and working to each others’ scripts.

No swap-backsies!  The creator of each comic will draw someone else’s comic and a third artist will draw the first creator’s comic.  Simple eh?WASP (Webcomic Artist Swap Project)

I’m very excited to announce the amazing array of artists and webcomics involved…

Score & Script

Last Wednesday 21 November 2012 saw the private view / opening night of an exhibition of pages of art from the very clever John Miers Score & Script project, taking place at the Centre for Recent Drawing, C4RD, 2-4 Highbury Station Rd, N1 1SB) up until 15 December.

30 artists including myself have taken part in the project, creating comic pages from based on an unusual script or a mysterious score, both originated by John.  23 of the artists are showing their work.  The others are still working on their entries.

The creators all worked without consulting each other as part of John’s academic research.  Since some artists are still completing their work, and I don’t want to influence their final results, I have censored the exhibit photos, but will post the complete images when all is made public.

In the mean time, the only way to see the comic pages is to head to the exhibition!  John Miers
himself suggests…

“A really excellent time to visit would be Sat Dec 8th, when we’ll also be doing a comics fair selling other work by the exhibitors, some of whom may even be mooching about in person!… I already have a big stash of Richy’s wares in stock, and will be pimping them aggressively!”

A whole kaboodle of visitors at the private view
