Comics at North London Collegiate School

I had a great time yesterday visiting the North London Collegiate School in Edgware.NCLS-01It’s an impressive place, dating back to 1850 when it was the first school for girls in the UK and also the first school with a  headmistress.  I had a look at some of the A-level art on display – an incredibly high standard showing so many creative ideas.

One sure sign of a good school is the range of comics and graphic novels in the school library!  This didn’t disappoint as Terence Chan, the Senior School Librarian explained he’d had help selecting the titles from my friend and collaborator Steven Walsh of Gosh Comics.  Nice to see Francesca Dare’s Penny Blackfeather there amongst the goodies!

Tempo Lush Tales Teasers: Steven Walsh

Anyone who’s been guided by his comic expertise or in Gosh! Comics in Soho, or been entertained and enlightened by him on the South London Hardcore podcast will know how easy to listen to and damn smart Steven Walsh is!

So I was extremely happy when Steve agreed to write the foreword to Tempo Lush Tales.  Here’s a snippet….

“It’s always exciting when you realise you are living through a Golden Age.
By their very nature they are brief, barely tangible moments in history where enough elements align to allow for the flourishing of a particular movement or medium and it’s wonderful to be able to realise that one is happening around you.

Cover-for-PromoSteve also scripts comics himself which can be seen in The Comix Reader, Score & Script and Wu Wei and writes about them in Your Days Are Numbered.

If that’s not enough he’s currently running three regular comic related meet ups at Gosh!, Gosh!p (graphic novel reading group), Capers! (focusing on superheros) and Process (an evening for comic creators to learn and discuss their craft).

More importantly this is what Steve and his co-host Jack McInroy looked like when I drew them as octopuses.
